If your machine has more than one port, make sure that the cable is connected to the USB port and not another port such as a network port, line jack or EXT jack. Try a different port on your computer if available. Disconnect and then reconnect the USB cable on both ends. Use a type A/B USB cable that is no longer than 6 feet. Verify that the USB cable is connected directly from the Brother machine to the computer.
